Founded by industry veteran Anne Staines in 2004, Sagent (formerly ProProse) is an award-winning marketing and communications agency specializing in socially beneficial campaigns. Our team contracts with public agencies, nonprofit organizations and privately owned “companies with a conscience” throughout the state and region to create and manage campaigns that advance and enhance people’s health, safety and wellbeing. Offering a full-range of strategic and creative services, Sagent creates innovative and sustainable campaigns and programs that inspire positive social norm changes.

The firm began in Staines’ pool house in her backyard near Carmichael. The unique location reinforced a healthy, environmentally-conscious culture that included natural lighting and fresh air, a raised-bed vegetable garden for the staff, walkable streets for exercise breaks, and two golden retrievers. Outdoor patios served as meeting spaces which clients loved. But with growth and success ProProse and its staff of seven outgrew the 550-square-foot pool house. The challenge was finding a new location that allowed the unique culture to continue.

The solution was found in a historic building in midtown Sacramento on 21st between V and W Streets, on one-third acre – including a large backyard. Originally built in 1903 by Edward P. Howe, Jr. as a single-family home, the building is listed in the National Historic Registry as significant for its Colonial Revival Style with some Shingle-Style features. The original details of the home, mixed with bright, welcoming decor and furnishings have come to represent the team and family-oriented culture at Sagent.

Anne Staines – President and Chief Strategist

Anne Staines is a leading social marketing expert, specializing in campaigns that motivate consumers to adopt behavior that is in their best interest and for the good of society. She has more than 25 years experience managing statewide and national campaigns for a wide range of public and private clients ranging from American Express, Columbia Pictures and Mattel to numerous public-sector clients including California Energy Commission, CalSTRS, Cal Grants, CAL FIRE, Department of Technology Services, First 5 Placer, and Caltrans.

Shelley Cousineau – Client Services Director

Shelley’s 20+ years of social marketing experience includes strategic campaign planning, brand management, client services, media planning, partnership and program building, public opinion surveys, focus groups, school programs and multicultural outreach. Her passion and specialty is in public information and education outreach programs for non-profits, government agencies and associations primarily focused on health and environmental issues related to water and air; specifically, water quality, stormwater, wastewater, water conservation, air quality and air pollution prevention.

Katie Mothersell- Account Supervisor

Katie is an established marketing professional with full-scope expertise in marketing programs spanning the spheres of cause marketing, behavior change, advocacy and public services. In the last decade at Sagent, she’s honed her expertise in brand strategy, creative development, outreach, social media, and digital and mobile assets such as websites and apps for public entities. Katie is currently leading CAL FIRE’s multi-million dollar wildfire preparedness and prevention campaign, which she has helped build from it’s inception over the last six years. She is also heading work with Roseville Electric Utility to develop and launch a values-driven branding campaign. She has served on the board of the International Association of Business Communicators Sacramento Chapter as vice president of special events. In her spare moments between client work, Katie has also taken on the challenge to find the meanest Bahn Mi sandwich in town.

Victoria Gonzalez – Accounting Manager

Victoria has over 11 years of experience managing finances and office operations, and is proficient in a variety of accounting and administrative programs. Her great writing skills and well-spoken nature complement her accounting skills and give her that extra edge. Victoria has managed bookkeeping and office operations for small businesses in the Greater Sacramento Area. She is experienced in the execution of a broad range of accounting functions necessary for the management of finances. She oversees accounting and budget reconciliation, and all other administrative support tasks.

Monica Simonson – Account Executive

Monica has seven years of PR experience. She has the ability to assist in multiple projects with stringent deadlines in a dynamic environment. She is well versed at implementing campaigns, fundraising, partnership building, event planning and implementation as well as in developing internal and external communications. Lauren Tracey – Executive Assistant and Project Coordinator

Lauren supports the entire client services team as a project coordinator. She works with client teams ensuring projects are on schedule and supporting the overall account as needed. Through status report maintenance, documentation management, event outreach coordination, presentation development, social media content writing, development and platform management, coordination of creative print and online materials, Lauren provides key support on several accounts. She is very passionate about the environment and women’s rights.

Kaiti Ray Accounting and Media Assistant

Kaiti has five years’ experience in tracking and analyzing data. She provides media and accounting assistance to the accounting team and assists the media director and project managers with media planning, placement, and budgets. She is in charge of creating, managing and tracking all purchase orders and insertion orders for Sagent and compares all media delivered against the media plan to make sure every account is on budget. Kaiti is pursuing her Bachelors of Science in Accountancy at National University.

Joseph Bonner – Data Analyst

Joe joined the Sagent team after completing his graduate studies in Social Psychology at University of California, Davis. His research focused primarily on behavior change psychology. Joe’s role at Sagent is to apply his expert knowledge of research methodology and data analysis to measure campaign effectiveness. In addition to his Master of Arts degree, Joe holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Villanova University. He is passionate about the environment and mental health issues.

Tierra and Keyes – Sagent Support Pups

Tierra and Keyes come to Sagent directly from the Staines’ family living room. Loyal and loving, their roles at Sagent are to offer canine companionship and support during times of high agency stress. Their special skills and work experience include: shaking, sitting, cuddling, giving ‘puppy dog eyes’ and making sure their humans feel loved and appreciated. They both hold graduate degrees in being adorable.
